Here's the classic 240 front brake backing plate rust out problem. Finally, these parts (which are going even on relatively "clean" cars) are available on a limited basis. These plates protect the wheel bearings from a constant dirt bath. This picture shows the remaining portion of the backing plate with the brake rotor and caliper removed.

Here the 'remains' have been removed, it has been stripped down to the axel.
